Benefits of Jiu-Jitsu For Kids

Many parents reach out to us searching for anti-bullying support for their kids. Jiu jitsu is a non threatening way to deal with bullies. It is a self defence martial art that applies the principles of pressure, leverage and timing to ensure non-violent conflict resolution and absolutely assists with bullying prevention. Jiu-Jitsu is such a humbling sport. People with big egos don't have a place around here.

But there are so many other benefits of Jiu-Jitsu, that are often not recognised at first glance. So today we wanted to give you a run down on the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu for our Sunshine Coast kids.

Self Defence

BJJ is a martial art centered around respect and self defence. We teach children modern jiu-jitsu techniques. Our classes include traditional wrestling drills, submission tactics, escapes and take down strategies - but children take away so much more than the physical skills.

Social Development

Make friends and learn a new skill at Chess Club Jiujitsu. Greet everyone, show respect, encourage your mates and take care of everyone. Our BJJ community is built on a foundation of trust, respect and fun! Jiujitsu is such a humbling sport where people with big egos don't have a place.

Agility & Endurance

Make movement an integral part of your child’s life. BJJ teaches children to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Improved agility and endurance will benefit your kids both mentally and physically in all aspects of their life.

Dealing with failure

Empower your kids to build a healthy relationship with failure. Dealing with failure is a skill that we must learn. We encourage and support our BJJ kids with the mindset that If at first you don’t succeed, try again. We will be here to support you all the way.

Confidence & achievement

It’s important to our coaches that all kids feel a sense of achievement in their practice of jiu jitsu. We encourage goal setting and personal progress. There is no place for ego’s at Chess Club Jiu Jitsu, we support our team mates and each individual’s perseverance, determination and confidence to try again.

Life skills

Be respectful, keep hygiene standards high and follow uniform guidelines. Beyond the physical training, BJJ teaches children skills that will contribute to a healthy mindset and a healthy lifestyle.

Coordination and motor skills

BJJ teaches spatial awareness and allows kids to develop greater control of their bodies. The movements and improved agility we learn through practicing BJJ can be carried across to all other sports and activities. ie. When you know how to fall, you are less likely to be injured in other sports.

Jiu-jitsu is a skill for life. We’d love for you to join us for a free trial so we can show you what it’s all about. We’re located in Warana, at Shop 4 / 1 Premier Cct.

Rafael Miyashiro - Head Coach

“Jiu-Jitsu came into my life by accident, 13 years ago I signed up for a fitness gym that offered boxing classes in the membership. The boxing coach also taught BJJ and invited me to join his class.

It was love at first sight. I became heavily addicted to the art, and Jiu-Jitsu became the number one priority in my life. I have never chased money or success through BJJ, I just aspired to train as often as I could, so the way I figured out to do it was by BJJ becoming my job.

Why do people become addicted to BJJ? I believe it’s the constant frustration that is involved, which creates the will for constant improvement. It is such a humbling sport where people with big egos don't have a place. The life lessons we learn through martial arts such as discipline, respect, and resilience are the key elements we are building in our community, changing people's attitude towards life in general, in their relationships, work and family. That's how Chess Club makes a contribution to the future of society.”
